DeFrag Fridays: empty your head with no response back

Here's a program we're building, and the thinking behind it, because the thinking is the point.

DeFrag Friday works like this. You take a recording device — a voice recorder, an AI pin, your phone in airplane mode with a recorder running — and you get into a float tank. Sensory deprivation: no light, no sound, no notifications, nothing to react to. And then you talk. Everything on your mind. What you're building, what you're worried about, the argument you keep rehearsing, the idea you're most excited about, every day you've ever had if that's where it goes. You spit out all of it, uninterrupted, for as long as it takes.

And nothing answers.

That's the entire design. No response. No "that's a profound insight." No follow-up question steering you deeper. The first extended stretch many heavy AI users have spent with their own thoughts in months — because if you're honest, even your private thinking now happens in dialogue with something that talks back.

Why no response is the feature

We've written about the validation loop: models mirror your framing and validate you dramatically more than humans do, and a tired mind in that loop calcifies around its favourite ideas. The countermeasure isn't less thinking. It's thinking that lands somewhere silent — where a claim just hangs there, unpraised, and you get to hear how it actually sounds.

People who journal know this effect. Talking into silence is journaling at the speed of speech, and the tank removes the last distractions to hide in.

Then — and only then — the AI gets the tape

Later that week, on your schedule and rested, you load the recording into your AI and sift it. What holds up? What was the sleep deprivation talking? Which "breakthrough" sounds, at one week's distance, like the thing you already tried in March?

This ordering matters and it's the whole trick: generate in silence, evaluate with the machine. The standard loop runs the other way — generate with the machine, evaluate never — and that's the loop that gets people in trouble. Same tools, same you; the sequence is the difference.

What DeFrag Friday is and isn't

It isn't therapy, and we won't pretend it is. It's hygiene — a deliberate weekly defragmentation for a mind that runs hot all week, built on ordinary ingredients: solitude, speech, silence, and review. When Touch Grass Wellness opens, DeFrag Fridays will run as a structured program alongside the counselling itself — details, locations, and how it fits with weekly check-ins to come.

Nothing stops you prototyping it this Friday, though. A bathtub with the lights off and a voice memo is 80% of the tank. Talk until you're empty. Let nothing answer. See what's still true on Tuesday.

Touch Grass Wellness is a counselling practice being built in British Columbia for people whose AI use has started to affect their sleep, relationships, or sense of what is real. Booking hasn't opened yet — we're finalizing our counselling team. Leave your details and we'll tell you the moment it does.

Touch Grass Wellness publishes practical writing about heavy AI use and mental health. Clinical claims link to their sources; nothing here is a diagnosis or a substitute for assessment by a qualified professional.
